Excerpt from the May 9, 2017 letter from Fr. Pat, released in the May 14, 2017 Watertown Catholic bulletin:
Beginning Monday, May 22, with the approval of the St. Bernard Pastoral and Finance Councils, the inside of St. Bernard Church (Sanctuary, Nave, main entrance, balcony and stairways) will have the plaster repaired and repainted. Due to the extensive nature of scaffolding this project, the hazard for people to be in the church, and the extended time frame that would happen if we keep the church open during the project; we decided to close St. Bernard Church during the project. We are planning to reopen the church on or before Saturday, September 2. The cost of this project is $510,000, but could possibly increase if the contractor has to replace any bad plaster that isn’t visible from the floor, when they inspect the top ceiling. The cost of this project is covered by the $550,000 that is in the Aspire account.Starting the week of May 22, all Masses and services will be held at St. Henry church. The proposal of celebrating Mass in the St. Bernard gym did not move forward due to several factors:1. Size of the gym (too small for Sunday 10 a.m. Mass).2. Amount of time and volunteers required to set up/take down for three months.3. The summer cleaning and waxing of gym floor.4. The need for the gym in August for school activities.5. The ability to use an actual church that is only 6-7 blocks away.Meetings that are held in the chapel at St. Bernard will be moved to another location at St. Bernard or can be held at St. Henry. The Mass, Confession, and Adoration schedule will stay the same except for having only one Mass on Wednesday morning at 8:15 a.m.The Masses that will move from St. Bernard to St. Henry (Tuesday 5:15 p.m., Thursday 8:15a.m, Friday 8:15 a.m, Saturday 5:30 p.m, Sunday 10 a.m, Sunday 6 p.m. and every other Wednesday 8:15 p.m.) will still be considered St. Bernard Masses. The Mass Intentions will be for St. Bernard parishioners. The ministers (Music, Eucharistic Ministers, and Lectors), usher, and greeter schedules will be St. Bernard’s. In other words, if you are scheduled to do a role in St. Bernard church, we are asking you to do the same role in St. Henry church. The collections for the above Masses will be St. Bernard’s. A “How To Do” sheet will be provided to each of the different roles. All special Masses held at St. Henry during this time frame, such as funerals for St. Bernard parishioners, will be registered in the St. Bernard Registry. The family will still have the option to have the funeral luncheon in the St. Bernard gym. If a St. Bernard parishioner’s child is baptized, their baptism will be recorded in the St. Bernard Registry.
